Escaping to the Country: What does Rode offer?
26th February 2021
During the pandemic, city living for many has rapidly lost its appeal and much of its necessity, with future working patterns looking likely to involve much less time in the office or commuting and more time at home. Many house movers are now choosing to turn their attention to country locations and the double opportunity of lower house prices and a change of lifestyle. We're taking a close look at what life in the beautiful Somerset village of Rode has to offer if you're looking to escape to the country.
London is in range, it'll take you about an hour and a half to drive to the M25, or catch a train at Trowbridge (less than 5 miles away), and you'll be at Paddington in less than 2 hours. The regional capital Bristol is around 20 miles away, offering an international airport, and the beautiful historic city of Bath is less than ten, with both cities boasting lots of opportunities for work and pleasure.
Charming Local Towns
Closer to home, you'll find a charming collection of local towns within easy reach. Bradford on Avon, or' Bradford the Beautiful' is a local jewel with Medieval and Georgian architecture and idyllic riverside setting. The town is crammed with interesting independent shops and places to explore. Popular with tourists, there's usually something happening, making it an excellent destination for a family day out. Frome and Trowbridge are also close enough to pop into and offer independent shops, cafes and all the usual amenities.
Fresh Air & Open Country
There are many excellent local family- and dog-friendly walks to be enjoyed straight from the village, with great views across open countryside. Within easy reach, there are two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You can see the Mendip Hills rising away in the distance, and they're a great place to explore with green hills, spectacular gorges and lots of trails, walkways and ancient monuments. Cranborne Chase AONB isn't far either and offers a considerable area of rich and varied landscapes with open grasslands, downland hillsides and chalk river valleys all ready to explore.
Things to Do
Rode may be a rural escape, however, the benefits of city life aren't far away. Less than ten miles away, the World Heritage City Bath is internationally famous as a centre of arts and culture. The Roman Baths are one of the finest historical sites in Europe, and there's not just history on offer. This is an exciting, cosmopolitan city that plays host to festivals, international events, bars, restaurants and high-quality sporting fixtures, including Premiership rugby. Nearer to Rode, there's also plenty to do. The member's club at Babington House has a spa, restaurant, grounds and leisure facilities. Orchardleigh Golf Club is close and there are a variety of other leisure and sports centres and gyms on hand too. In Rode itself, the Cross Keys Pub is at the heart of the local community, while the stylish riverside restaurant at Rode Mill is another excellent local spot to enjoy.
